The production of deuterium-depleted water (DDW) is a highly specialized isotope-separation process. Deuterium is chemically almost identical to normal hydrogen. This poses a greater challenge for the removal of deuterium. This is not ordinary filtration — it is isotope fractionation at very large scale. This is not reverse osmosis his fractional distillation. This is not just ordinary fractional distillation but in a vacuum. This is what make DDW a different class of water.
The Origin of True Purity
The water first go through the normal stages of water treatment similar to normal bottled water. It is then pass through multistage vacuum distillation to allow slow evaporation. Some of the tank can be as tall as 40meters. The system comprises of stainless steel towers, heat exchangers, condensers, recirculation systems and precision isotope monitoring equipment. The vacuum conditions reduce boiling temperatures and improve energy efficiency.
This process is repeated progressively to remove more and more deuterium. The lower the ppm: the harder, the slower, and the more energy-intensive the process becomes.
To achieve the above, a refinery-style tall tower appearance is therefore common, but the actual isotope-separation system can be a network of columns rather than one tower alone.

Prior to export, the water undergoes isotope analysis at a specialised laboratory in the United States. Upon arrival in Australia, it is independently tested again both before and after the bottling process.
